The Government of Armenia and Georgia are committed to reform the Higher Education as well as the Health and Social sector towards more comparable systems and standards of Europe. The officially recognised disability policy in Armenia and Georgia is expressed in law and guidelines adopted by the Government. The emphasis is on social protection of persons with disabilities and rehabilitation.
The long-term goal is to create conditions to enable the participation of physically and mentally disabled children and adults in society. The introduction of the profession and education of occupational therapy will play an important role in this process.
From 1996 till 1999 a similar process has taken place in Czech republic, which leaded by means of a JEP-project no: 11223-96 (involvement of Caledonian University (UK) and Hogeschool van Amsterdam(NL) towards the development of an Occupational therapy curriculum at the Charles University of Prague, which is recently recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.
In 1991 and from 1997-2000 different occupational short courses have been given in rehabilitation centres in Armenia.
In 2002 members of the European Network of Occupational Therapy (ENOTHE) have started to train the first 10 occupational therapists in CCNNR in Tbilisi.
The good practice developed in the above mentioned projects will be used in this JEP to develop occupational therapy as a discipline in the Universities and health care institutions in order to facilitate the participation of disabled in the Armenian and Georgian Society.
The first year the consortium will work on the development of an OT curriculum framework for Armenia and Georgia and a flexible system of joint OT education at Bachelors/Masters and Postgraduate level as well as on the adaptation of the existing modules and teaching materials from the former projects to the need of the identified target groups.
The second and the third year the courses together with the fieldwork will be implemented. The first OTs will be educated as lecturers and fieldwork supervisors. Intensive courses, seminars and information sessions for colleagues and a wider public will be carried out. OT services and information centres for client groups will be set up as well as projects to facilitate the inclusion of the disabled in education and employment.
With this project the consortium will contribute towards the aims of the European Year of the disabled in 2003.
